The data we will publish, and how we are held to account

DfE guidance requires every school to publish examinations data on their website. Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire is no exception.

The Progress 8 measure, EBacc and their relevance to UTCs

Progress nationally is measured from KS2 via the mechanism of Progress 8. This does not capture the progress learners achieve at the UTC as this does not represent their starting points at the UTC. The students at the UTC do not study the EBacc suite of qualifications.

Furthermore the Ofsted framework states:

When evaluating pupil progress between key stages 2 and 4, inspectors will take account where pupils start part way through a phase or key stage (for example if they join a university technical college at age 14).’’

*Department for Education statement from the school performance tables October 2019:

Schools and colleges not covering full Progress 8 period

Some schools start educating pupils partway through the 5-year period covered by Progress 8, which should be taken into account when comparing their results with schools that start at Key Stage 3. Progress 8 is not the most appropriate performance measure for university technical colleges, studio schools and some further education colleges. These establishments typically start educating pupils at age 14, with a focus on preparing pupils for their future careers by providing an integrated academic and professional education. Other headline measures, particularly pupil destinations, are more important for these establishments.

Destinations is the measure of a UTC’s impact/success. Retention at the UTC is high and the students that do leave is because they have been supported to acquired prestigious and competitive apprenticeships.
