Introduction

Throughout the Science curriculum we strive to have quality employer engagement with linked projects across all 3 specialisms. These occur around once per half term. The curriculum is designed to be reviewed after each assessment period, allowing us to tailor the curriculum to the needs of our students. We use baseline testing to set aspirational targets for each student, encouraging them to reach their full potential and move on to their desired destinations. Providing a safe working environment is one of our highest priorities. Each student provides a risk assessment and safety brief with every practical undertaken in the laboratories. We also link health and safety practices within the laboratories to our rewards policy so that students are praised for working in a professional and responsible manner, as would be expected in their chosen profession.

Year 9

Our Year 9 Biology curriculum focuses on more in-depth exploration of biological systems, processes, and the cell.  Practical skills like microscopy and data analysis are also emphasised. This curriculum provides a foundation for further study in biology at GCSE level.

Key Content

  • Fundamental skills for biologists
  • Cell biology
  • Cell transport and organisation
  • The heart and non-communicable diseases
  • Respiratory and digestive systems
  • Infection and response
  • Bioenergetics

Year 10

Our Year 10 Biology curriculum focuses on building upon prior knowledge from Year 9, deepening understanding of key concepts, and strengthening the links between them. It includes a review of topics like cells, organisation, the immune system, and the structure of DNA. Practical skills, scientific thinking, and literacy are also emphasised.

Key Content

  • Homeostasis and response
  • Reproduction, genetics and inheritance
  • Biotechnology, variation and evolution
  • Ecology
  • Human interactions on ecosystems

Year 11

Our Year 11 Biology lessons focus on consolidating and building upon previous learning, preparing our students for GCSE exams.

Why a STEM education?

The word STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM subjects are important as not only do they pervade every part of our lives but is also a hugely exciting area, offering the chance for individuals to continue changing and developing the world we live in. At it’s very core, a STEM education is about a young individuals ability to make a meaningful connection between school, community and global issues.

  • Science is everywhere. Studying science provides a better understanding of the world around us and continues to help shape the modern world we live in
  • Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. It makes the world run efficiently and serves a variety of purposes to different people
  • Engineering covers a wide range of disciplines and helps to find solutions for everyday problems. As the world continues to change, engineers are usually found at the forefront of much of these developments
  • Mathematics is used on a daily basis, far more often then you may realise! Maths helps us to think analytically and have better reasoning abilities
