Introduction

We offer a comprehensive and creative mathematics curriculum. Our intention is to both inspire students to study maths as a discipline and also understand the fundamental role that mathematics plays in mastering their chosen specialism.  We have structured our curriculum not just to alleviate any issues that may arise from changing school in Year 9 but also to see this as an opportunity to dig deeper into subjects that students may not have had a firm grasp on in the past.

Our curriculum will give students the opportunity to:

  • Gain and master understanding of key concepts in mathematics and understand how this contributes to our ability to solve problems
  • Move confidently from the general to the specific and vice versa when using mathematical concepts to solve problems
  • Use their newly acquired knowledge to tackle problems both at and above their current level of working
  • Understand the importance of both written and oral communication and develop their mathematical communication skills
  • Gain extra or supplementary qualifications in addition to GCSE Mathematics
  • Enrich their experience of mathematics through challenges/trips/competitions

In short, we want students to experience the joy that mathematics can bring and to help them develop a deep understanding and life long love of the subject.

Year 9

The Year 9 Maths curriculum builds upon previous learning in number, algebra, ratio, proportion, geometry, measures, probability, and statistics, with a focus on applying these concepts to solve problems. Students will solidify their understanding of foundational topics while also tackling more advanced concepts in preparation for GCSEs.

Key Content

  • Decimals and negatives
  • Number comparison and rounding
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Algebra
  • Specialism maths
  • Arithmetic with fractions
  • Ratio and percentage change
  • Mathematical models
  • Standard form and the number system

Year 10

Our students focus on building upon Key Stage 3 knowledge and skills, preparing students for the GCSE Mathematics exam. Students will refine their understanding of concepts like Pythagorean theorem, linear equations, and functions, while also exploring more advanced topics like quadratic equations.
